HachiSales Question Time: Paypal Fees
Even though this website has a comment feature, it’s not the easiest place for interaction and most of you prefer to contact me via tumblr or twitter. 🙂
From now on when I’m asked relevant questions on those platforms, I’ll copy them over here so no matter where your point of contact with me is, you can find the same info at this hub!
Recently, someone asked about paypal fees. So here goes:

The back-end controls of the web shop is not as sophisticated as you might imagine. :’D

Using the current setting (i.e. accepting NO payment when the order is submitted), there’s no option to add on fee at the checkout stage. Perhaps this could be changed with additional coding etc, but tbh our sales volume is low, thus not worth the cost or effort to implement such a change.
However, I can tell you exactly how much fee I charge, so you could anticipate it next time!
Fees for UK Customers
Standard local fee of 20p + 3.4%.
I just use the Cloth Nappy Tree Calculator lol. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
Fees for Non UK Customers
This is where things get a bit complicated. Paypal charges:
20p + domestic fee + cross border fee
The fee varies for different countries, so to make things simple for myself, I add flat rate 7% fee to all non UK orders.

As you can see from the examples above, generally there will be pennies leftover. These go towards the fund for when:
- Your order unexpectedly exceeds the package weight limit by a bit, so I cover the extra shipping cost (eg. you order 8 items but they weight 102g ayeee)
- You send me low amount. I actually couldn’t receive the full amount after fees are deducted:

Back in the old days I would ask people to pay back the shipping difference if their package exceeds its weight limit. However, some people don’t answer lol. And those who do kindly pay me back the £1 or £2, there’s nothing left after taking out the fees anyway.
These days I’m pretty good at estimating weight, but occasionally when a strap turns out to be ham size, it still throw things off!
